Hormozgan, November 2017, day 1

Great Knot
I accompanied a Norwegian group on an eight day birding trip in Hormozgan Province in November 2017 and we saw great stuff.

Located on the north side of the Hormuz Strait, Hormozgan provides great opportunities for birding esp in autumn and winter.
In this trip, we covered the east part of the province from Bandar Abbas to Jask.

In the first day, we started with the Velayat Park in the east of BA where in its shore many waders can be seen. With less than 20 minutes from the hotel, it's a good location to start the day.

One of the target species was the Great Knot which at least 20 of them were present. Also Lesser Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, and Terek Sandpiper were present. You can find the checklist here.

On the weekends the park is a bit crowded.
Despite the ban on alcoholic drinks in Iran (the penalty is 80 lashes and if it's done in public a six month prison can be added to the punishment), these youths were drinking beer in public near the waders with the view of a mosque in the background. A very complex society!

The next stop was the Jahad Park in the east of BA where is a good place to find the Crested Honey Buzzard, Shikra, and migrant passerines. The checklist can be found here.

After lunch, we visited a slaughter field in the north of BA that is known as Koshtargah where different species of raptors like Steppe Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Black Kite, Egyptian Vulture can be seen. The checklist is here.
